Author: Al Philipson Delightful. Entertaining! Totally engrossing.
I love the twists and turns. Even the evil Archbishop is fun to hate (I'd pick Alan Rickman to play him).

Author: Al Kalar A Farmer who’s More than a Farmer
Oh, goody. A space opera (kinda) and a nice twist with two competing royal houses. And shades of The Three Musketeers, an evil archbishop just to stir the pot. Cardinal Richelieu, eat your evil heart out; this guy is nastier than you.
If I had to carp about something, it would be the start of the book. I really love a book where the explosions, the abduction, the dirty deed, or the war, is there on the first page.
Don’t get me wrong, there is conflict in the first chapter, but the story wanders off into (necessary) “preparation” (by the author) for the main story and conflict which doesn’t show up for a couple of chapters (although there’s enough to keep a reader from losing interest).
Once things get going, the explosions are few and far between, because this book is more about trickery and deception than big space battles (although there is some of that too). And the trickery and deception are very well handled and ladled out with just the right amount of spice in the soup. I loved every bit of it.
I think I’ve become a McMurtry fan. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
