Author: Al Kalar An Urban Fantasy? for Engaged Readers.
This can be a difficult book to follow. When I'm enjoying fiction I'm a lazy reader. Perhaps too lazy?
The problem is that there are three hunks of space junk involved in the story. Once you get that into your head, it's a lot easier to follow. There are two "seeds" and something else, called "the ophanim".
After I got that figured out, the story was great. Nen is a true "knock-`em-down" hero, trained in martial arts and deadly with conventional weapons as well.
The aliens border on fantasy figures, but I suspect they're supposed to be just aliens with non-human capabilities (like the ability to exist on another plane and to inhabit human bodies). Still sounds like fantasy to me. I guess that's why it's in both the science fiction and fantasy categories.
I deducted a star in my rating because of my initial confusion about which hunk of space junk was which (remember, I'm lazy). Otherwise, it was a very enjoyable story and I'm looking forward to the next installment.
Disclosure: I work for the publisher, but I can say anything I want (including grousing about my confusion). So, take it for what it's worth.
