Author: Allan Kalar Lt. James Harrison has a new partner and a new case.
His new partner is fresh out of the hospital and his case is in the headlines, but bereft of clues. The guy murdered a woman, raped her after she was dead, then carefully cleaned up after himself.
Not only that, but it's an election year and the mayor wants a quick arrest. The mayor is pressuring Harrison's boss and he in turn is on Harrison's back.
Just when James thought it couldn't get worse, the guy strikes again.
I'm not much of a mystery fan, but this book could make me into one. The author obviously knows a lot about police and investigative procedure (or he's good at faking it -- I can be fooled). The cops aren't super-slick Hollywood idols, but rather hard-working, tired, civil servants trying to hang on long enough to collect their pensions. I think I can believe that more than the "beautiful people" on "Hawaii Five Oh", playing with super-neat high-tech stuff.
I found myself plodding through the blind alleys and interviews that make up an investigation and enjoying every minute of it (probably because I get to read about it, rather than having to go through it).
Everything gets tied up in the end without any surprise solutions coming out of left-field (the author doesn't cheat). I won't say any more for fear of spoiling it; you'll have to see if you can figure it out before the detectives do.
Slug down a last gulp of strong coffee, Officer. Grab your badge and gun, and get your ass to work. It's going to be another long, frustrating day.
