Author: Mary Elizabeth Fricke Review: The President's Kidnapped
I'm a sucker for anything that resembles the dog, "woman's best friend", you know: wolves, foxes, etc. all suffice. So the cover of "The President's Kidnapped' definitely caught my eye. And my first question was, how do wolves kidnap the president? Well, they didn't but a wolf is definitely the sweetheart in this story.
The majority of espionage/thriller/killer/kidnapping stories I've read begin with the crime in action or immediately after. So-and-so kidnapped that one and now we can figure out why. Maybe we'll rescue the victim; maybe we won't, at least not while he/she still lives.
The President's Kidnapped is different in that the story begins with those who plan to kidnap; how they plan to commit their crime; and why. It does a really good job of bringing the reader into the mind of the corrupt politician, those who will do anything in the name of their political party regardless of what effect their actions have on the country.
Although the story seems to drag a bit in 'the kidnap planning' stage it contains enough twists and surprises to keep the reader interested and turning pages to find out why that happened and what is next. Even though all questions were answered in the end and the reason for the lengthy build-up in the beginning was apparent, the one drawback, for me, was the numerous characters. It was difficult to remember all of the president's men ... err, enemies.
Most interesting, to me, is that the primary character is not the kidnapper, or the kidnapped or the government appointed rescuer. He's an innocent bystander caught up in witnessing a crime he wants no part of but must become involved in just to survive.
I think this story should be made into a movie. What with the Alaskan wilderness as the setting and the continual action, it would surely be a multi-million dollar box office attraction. In fact, while I was reading, I argued with myself, whether Kevin Costner or Harrison Ford would best play the primary character, Joe Long.
