Author: Sam White
Stranded Angels by Ralph Joseph-Mirani's an interesting science fiction tale that breaks off from the pack thanks to its setting. While there are many stories about alien encounters out there and some take place in olden times, this one stands out by taking place in Mesopotamia--the ancient version of the Middle East--which makes things an even more interesting culture clash than usual.

Ali is a simple trader who merely wants his business to succeed to take care of his family...and slave girl. But a gang of bandits is terrorizing the countryside, attacking whole caravans...which means a lone man with some mules would really be in trouble. While trying to escape the bandits after seeing them in action, Ali stumble upon an incredible sight: a group of reptilian people in a flying house putting something in a cave. This is the start of a grand adventure that will show him how vast an incredible the world--an beyond--truly is while having the chance to become unbelievably wealthy...if he survives.

The story gives a fascinating look at the culture of the Middle East with elements that still ring true today. There's an old world view of uranium, known here as "yellow rock" or "The Devil's Gold". There's a very interesting love triangle between Ali, his wife Laila, and slave girl Morigana that plays out differently than you might expect. Characters--both human and alien--are deep and interesting and the story is filled with twists and turns to keep things lively. The exchanges between the humans and "inquads" are especially entertaining.

However, it's not perfect.

My main problem is with Morigana, who starts out likable and interesting but devolves into a Mary Sue: too beautiful, too smart, too talented, and too lucky to be believable as she steals the spotlight in almost every scene she's in. Which is a darn shame since she starts out good enough. Also, skip Chapter 22. You won't miss anything.

If you want a story about aliens that's different from usual talk about invasions or equality, then check out Stranded Angels for something a little different.
